4LB ´Visit Lisbon' mini exhibition tomorrow!

Today, 4D did a FANTASTIC job of advertising and persuading children, parents, teachers and assistants to visit Lisbon. Tomorrow is 4LB's turn and we hope that you will be able to come in and visit our classroom tomorrow between 08:40 and 9:50 to see if you would like to take a tour to the wonderful city of Lisbon!

We would love to see you there!

Travel Agents

As we all know, Year 4 has been busily working on their final summative assessment where they are creating travel agencies! We will be having a mini exhibition in the two year 4 classes where we will be having other classes and parents welcome to come see how we have been working! They are all very exciting!

4D will be presenting their work on Monday June 29th for the first two periods of the day.
4LB will be presenting their work on Tuesday June 30th for the first two periods of the day.

Come and see all our FANTASTIC travel agencies, and see if they PERSUADE YOU!

Maths Homework this week - 21st June

This week we are having a change from what we normally do! We are asking you to visit a great website that you have previously used in class. We would like you to go to the list of maths blogs and choose the Gordon's Maths site. You can select ANY of the games to practise your number skills - yes, ANY of the games can be played!!! BUT, you will need to tell us which of the games you played in Friday's lesson.

We really hope you find this website helpful and it would be great if you visited this over the summer holidays, so add it to your favourites!

Unit of Inquiry homework - research for Summative Assessment task

As the lovely Miss D said in a previous post, we will be using our UoI homework time to continue our research for the Summative Assessment task which will be to create a 'Travel Agency' encouraging a target audience to visit Lisbon (and surrounding beaches, parks, museums etc).

Yesterday, each child should have received 2 'tourist' maps of the Lisbon area. We would like the children to look at the maps they have received and discover all the reasons why someone might like to visit Lisbon. Also, we would like them to look at the different areas which make up Lisbon and the attractions in those different areas (a little geography, i.e. where is the Centro Cultural de Belem in relation to the Parque das Nacoes). Perhaps, they may even be able to PERSUADE you to visit a museum or park in Lisbon that you, as a family, have never been to before...

It would be great to know if they have managed to use the persuasive techniques they have learnt in class to persuade you to go anywhere new!

There is no recording necessary for this homework. Perhaps the children could circle, in one colour, all the places they have already visited, and in another colour all the places they would be interested in visiting.

I hope this will be a fun activity in which the whole family can be involved in celebrating the wonderful city in which we live!

Unit Of Inquiry Homework

Hi all,

Year 4 is working hard on producing a fantastic set of summative assesments - our final one for year 4!

Your homework for this week is to ensure that you continue to do any pieces of work that bring your group closer to producing a fantastic summative assessment.
For example, you may edit your group´s paragraph, research information, collect images etc.
Remember the aim is to be creative and persuasive!

Enjoy!

Maths Homework - Due Friday 18 June

Hi there all,

We are continuing to make some great progress on our work in Maths across Year 4. Currently we are focusing on time, working with money and the revision of strategies learnt throughout the year.

The maths homework for this week is -
  • 4LB to complete page 128 of textbook.
  • 4D to complete the worksheet on money and page 128 of textbook if they have not already done so.
  • The focus for mental maths is number bonds to 100 and timestables and division facts. Please note, with mental maths, the children are encouraged to work on areas that they feel they need improvement.

Enjoy!

Unit of Inquiry homework due Tue 15/06

This week the children need to research Lisbon and surrounding areas (eg. Cascais, Estoril, Monsanto) as a travel destination and come up with a list of 10 main attractions (places to visit or see) in Lisbon or the surrounding areas.

They will also need to write a paragraph of at least 6 lines convincing their target audience of why Lisbon is a fantastic travel destination.

This homework is in preparation for your summative assessment, so if you don't do it you will really be letting your group down!

Please present your work neatly on an A4 piece of paper (typed or handwritten) with the title 'Travel to Lisbon', then the list of 10 places and then the paragraph. Your name should be at the bottom. No images/pictures necessary.

*(This is a little test to see if you can follow clear instructions!)

Enjoy!

Year 4 homework!

The Year 4 team would like to apologise for the inconsistency in homework going up on the blog.

Miss D and Miss Katy have been very heavily involved with the 'Peter Pan' production! I hope you will all be coming on Friday or Saturday night. The play starts at 8pm but you will have to be there a bit earlier if you are an usher or if you haven't bought tickets yet. Please remember that no photos/recordings will be allowed as the production will be being filmed professionally and there are some copyright laws that need to be adhered to!

Miss Bodfish has been running some very important maths workshops for parents and Miss Lamb was away in Dubai on a workshop last week (hence the Henna - in case you were wondering).

Language homework due Fri 4/6

4LB has completed most of their language homework this week in class (which linked to International Children's Day) but they need to finish off any bit they have not completed at home and discuss the first poem with your parents. I think this will prove for lovely conversations and revoke many memories that may have been forgotten. I'm prettu sure 4D knows what their homework is, also related to advertising.

Unit of Inquiry homework due Tue 8/6

For unit of inquiry homework this week you have 2 options relating to touristic adverts:
1) Find an advert in a magazine, newspaper or on this internet that is trying to persuade you to go to a particular city or country. Think about what makes an effective advert and whether this advert that you have found persuades you to visit this place or not. If it is effective - why? If it is not effective - why? How could it be improved? Talk about this with your parents. Bring it in and write your name on it - no other recording necessary!

2) Make your own effective advert convincing a particular target audience to go to a particular city or country. You might need to do some research for this one. You can do any city or country besides Lisbon or Portugal. Using what you have learnt about effective persuasive techniques make sure you advert is convincing, persusasive and attractive (A4 please). Can be done on the computer or by hand.

***PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THE COMPUTER, THAT GREAT, BUT IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PRINT IT OUT (IN LIBRARY OR IT ROOM) BEFORE IT IS DUE IN. We do not have the time in class to print out your homework for you. Bringing us a pen/memory stick with your homework on is not good enough. The library is open most lunchtimes for you to print documents and change books.

Rewards and certificates

Some children have already started receiving reading awards for surpassing Level 10+. If you recive one of these prestigious rewards it then becomes your responsibility to choose your own books from the library/home to read and Miss Katy will no longer change your books for you. Please note that you will still have to read every night and bring in our reading log each morning.

We are also getting ready to hand out of first 'Scribe awards' for mastering the technique of 'joined-up' handwriting. However, please note that this 'pen license' can be revoked at any time if your presentation deteriorates or we feel your handwriting has become illegible! If you receive one of these awards it means you can then write in your language and Unit of Inquiry books in black or blue ink (no other colours please as teachers find it hard to read and mark). You will still need to do all your maths work in pencil. So keep on practicing if you feel you are nearly there. : )

Scat cat
Check out the music blog for a video of 4LB doing their wonderful 'Scat cat' performance for Arts week. A huge thanks to Mrs Balazs for all the time and effort she put int o creating such a magical show.

Any questions, please feel free to email me, as usual!

Unit of Inquiry hw due 25/4

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since we have had Unit homework since we were practicing SO hard for our oral presentations - which were a HUGE success.

We also did an activity looking at the accessibility of our school: where we're doing well and where we could improve.

You have a choice regarding your homwork this week.

You need to try to PERSUADE someone of the importance of access for all (especially those with Special Needs).

You can do this by means of a poster, a letter, a magazine article, a flier - WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE just make sure it's persuasive!

Children in 4LB already have their hw set for them: some are designing posters or fliers, some are writing letters and some are doing magazine articles. (You know who you are)

As we have had a brief look at letter writing - I will attach TWO links to a games below that will teach/remind you of the skills invloved in writing a letter and what the different parts of a letter are called.

">

Letter Writing Generator

Make sure you visit both the links! Remember that if you are writing to someone you don't know it will be more of a business/formal letter. I have visited these sites quite a few times because I find them so much fun!

Enjoy and see you soon!

Maths for this week - starting 17th May

Hello!

The focus for this week is angles and direction. We shall be looking at the vocabulary used for angles (rotatio, turn, acute, obtuse, reflex, right angle, vertex, arm, protractor) and direction (north, south, east, west, right, left, next to, besides). We shall also look at how fractions and angles are connected as well as how these relate to clocks and time. So many connections!

This week we will be using lots of our thinking skills as we shall be having a big focus on problem solving. We shall be looking at a variety of problems and the children will be expected to use their different strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We are so impressed with the progress year 4 has made in multiplication and this activity will be great revision for everybody!

We shall also be looking at some investigations which will be great fun. We have one very special investigation about toffee in a tin and another using dice. We expect to hear lots of chatter about maths and look forward to seeing who can work together effectively in their groups - yet another opportunity to improve their group work skills!

Maths Homework - due Friday 21st May
Activity
p. 71 and 145 of the textbook - let's see who can follow directions and use a compass!

Practice
Please record in maths homework book- if you do not have this (4LB will not) then please record on a piece of paper.
Monday - Practise multiplying different numbers by ten.
Tuesday - Divide numbers by 10
Wednesday- Multiply numbers by 100
Thursday - Divide numbers by 100.
By the end of this week you will all be super duper at multiplying and dividing by 10/100!

4D's Assmebly!

Hello one and all!

Last week 4LB had their sharing for the assembly (which everyone thoroughly enjoyed) and now this week it is 4D's 3rd and final time to show the school what we've got!

The student's have chosen their topic they will talk about, have split into groups of common interest, have written their OWN scripts, and will present all of this marvelous work on FRIDAY! Please be sure to clear your schedules, it is going to be great!

Monday 10 May 2010

Summative Assessments - oral presentations! WOW!

Hello all,

4LB started their oral presentations today and Miss Lamb and Miss Katy were completely BLOWN AWAY by the incredibly high standard of the first 4 presenters. We are SO looking forward to hearing the rest of them. I have certainly learnt a lot of things about Down's syndrome, Tourettes syndrome, ADD and Epilepsy that I didn't know before - so thank you children!

For those of you who haven't yet presented. Please remember that your note cards should include only 'Tarzan-talk' notes or key words or phrases (that you may find hard to remember) and that you should know most of your presentation off by heart. Make sure you look up at the audience and speak clearly with good use of tone of voice. keep practicing to your parents, your dog and in front of the mirror! ; )

Good Luck to both 4D and 4LB with the rest of the presentations!

Miss Lamb

Congratulations to 4LB on assembly, Terry fox run and links

CONGRATULTIONS 4LB!

A HUGE congratulations to all the boys and girls in 4LB for their fantastic perfomance in the assembly this morning. I am especially proud of them for remaining calm whilst we were having all those technical difficulties backstage which was a real pity.

However, they did a spectacular job! Many of the children had very long and complicated lines to learn and there a quite a few shy children in the class who find it very difficult to speak up in front of such a large audience. The sign language was a real challenge for us to learn but, once again, the children rose to the challenge and did a super duper job! (I heard that there were a very teary eyes in the audience...)

We will try and upload some photos and hopefully even a video ASAP. If any parents managed to get a good recording of the assembly could you perhaps burn me a copy please?

Well done 4LB - I am very proud of you!

We look forward to our buddy class - 4D's sharing next week! I wonder if they are going to do the same thing a different way?!

TERRY FOX RUN!

We really hope to see you and your families at this special event tomorrow to raise money for cancer.

Please click on the link below for more information about Terry's legacy!

http://www.terryfox.org/

Where? Parque das Nações, Pavilhão de Portugal, Lisbon (where the aquarium is and the Vasco da Gama shoppin centre)
When? TOMORROW! 8th May. Registration starts at 9.30am but Miss D and I will be there around 10ish. The actual 'run' starts at 11am.
How much money should I bring? We hope you can bring a minimum of 1 euro but there is no limit to how much you can donate
Who can come? This event is open to all people of all ages. The distance is between 1.5 to 5km and you don't have to run. Most people who come in families will be walking. The more the merrier!
What should I wear? Comfortable walking shoes, sun cream and a hat!

It would be really great to see St Dominic's (especially Year 4) well represented at this event. Come on guys!

LINKS TO OTHER SCHOOL BLOGS

Finally - we have added links to the other blogs relating to the Year 4 curriculum. (Thank you Mrs Balazs!) You should see them if you scroll down on the right hand side of the page.

Have a lovely weekend and I REALLY hope to see some of you tomorrow!

4D/4LB Presentation Differences

Just as our unit is entitled "Same thing different way" the presentations in both of the classes will also be conveying the same messages but in a slightly different.

4LB has decided to work on their presentations entirely in an oral fashion and so will not use power points, posters, etc.

4D students have created some different visual components to their presentations and so will be allowed to use those, be they posters, diagrams, or power point presentations. If students do choose to create a poster or power point they are NOT to use any full sentences as it would be likely that the oral presentation would turn into simply reading a report.

But remember, the most important thing about these presentations (with OR without visuals) is that you ORALLY communicate your information in a clear and understandable manner.

Good luck!!

Friday 7 May 2010

Summative assessment - oral presentations!

Apologies for the fact that I put up the incorrect MONTH for 4LB's presentation dates. They are obviously in May not April... (silly me!)

The children should now have all the information they need to finish their 'speeches' on the special need they have been researching. Apart from a very small number of children - the majority have already finished their oral presentations which they can now edit, add interesting facts (optional) and a short closing paragraph/sentence. The children need to make sure that they have addressed all the criteria on the rubric - which has been uploaded.

This rubric is what the children will be assessed on so PLEASE make sure they keep referring back to it!

Please could you also assist your children in preparing note-cards with short notes (they should not read what they have written directly from a piece of paper or card - this will make for a poor presentation). Engaging with the audience is of the utmost importance: looking up, standing up straight, speaking clearly and with expression. Another good technique to engage the audience is to ask some questions to the audience. Practicing in front of a mirror is a great way to check how the audience will 'see' you during the presentation.

As was mentioned previously, the children may change or alter the presentations they have written at school as long as they still meet the criteria on the rubric and no props, Powerpoint presentations etc should be used please. We are trying to concentrate directly on the children's communication skills, using their voices expressively and engaging the audience with an interesting presentation.

Support will continued to be given to the EAL children and a few other children, within class next week to finish off their work.

We really feel that this has been a challenging but very worthwhile activity for the children to do. Their research skills have hugely improved as has their confidence in speaking in front of an audience.

This unit we have been focusing a lot on the concept of RESPONSIBILITY! It is YOUR responsibility to learn your lines for your presentation. Do it paragraph by paragraph and you will definitely make lots of mistakes at first but you'll get there!

Please come to see your class teacher if you have any concerns about your presentation and we will make sure to help you out! However, the only thing we can't do is learn your lines and do the actual speech for you ; )

We are really looking forward to hearing your presentations! Please remember to stick to the time limit of between 2 to 4 minutes.

4LB homework for this week

Dear children and parents,

As you all know 4LB's assembly is coming up on Friday and we have A LOT of preparation left to do. The dress code for the assembly is blue jeans and a plain white T-shirt. Children may come to school and stay in these clothes all day. It is not a fashion show so please do not go out and buy new clothes for the occasion. If your child does not have a plain white T-shirt, the white school (veritas) T-shirt is perfect!

Children should have all been given scripts today so PLEASE could you make sure you have learnt your words OFF BY HEART by Thursday. You need to know who you will be speaking after so you know when to say your lines and you must bring these scripts into school with you every day!

ALSO - PLEASE make sure you learn the sign language for 'Imagine' by Thursday too.

This homework will replace any Unit of Inquiry homework or language homework you have this week and even though there is nothing that you will be required to 'hand in' as such - if you do not learn your lines or the sign language it will affect the whole classes assembly on Friday.

So, please be considerate and responsible and make sure you learn your lines, the song and the sign language.

Click here to learn the sign language

Click here to learn the lyrics
By the end of this week we will also have finished our preparation/notes for the oral presentations (please see Miss D's post on this). 4LB, however, will not be allowed to use any props, pictures or posters for their oral presentations. They will only be allowed note cards on which they should have short (Tarzan-talk) notes. They will all have their speeches written out and ready to take home by Friday as well as their rubric which clearly states what criteria they will be assessed on. They may make some changes to their speech if they feel after reading the rubric that they have not fully met the criteria or cut it down if it is too long.

Presentation dates are as follows:

Monday 10/5 - Carla, Afonso, Laura, Miguel

Wednesday 12/5 - Rita, Sofia, Zé, Amrit

Thursday 13/5 - Daniella, Inês, Aya, Charlene

Friday 14/5 - Leonor, Sonia, Marta, Chiara, Luis, Andrea*

Monday 17/5 - Francisco, Rodrigo, Gonçalo, Khalid

NB - Please could you support your children in learning their words for their oral presentation, making note-cards and ensuring that they meet the criteria on the rubric.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or queries.

Thank you,

Miss Lamb

PS. Please remember to come and support your children in their class assembly on Friday! You´ll make their day.

PPS: PLEASE do not forget the Terry Fox Charity run this Saturday (May 8th). Registration starts at 9:30 am and the fun run will take place at 11:00am.

For more info on Terry Fox run click here!

4D Language Homework

This week our friends in 4LB will be doing their assembly (Friday May 7th) so their Language Arts homework will be associated with their assembly preparation.

4D's Language Homework is related to our exploration of the accessibility of buildings to people with special needs. Students are given either wheelchair access, visual impairment, or hearing impairment. They must create a t-chart with the special need they are assigned to written at the top of the page and underlined. The two sides of the t-chart must say What we have and What we need pertaining to St. Dominic's. The students need to list the various things we DO have here to provide accessibility to people with special needs and things that we still NEED to have to make our school more accessible. This ties into our key concepts of perspective and responsibility.

This homework is due Friday May 7th.

Friday 30 April 2010

Special Needs Research Project

As you are aware, each Year4 student has been busy studying a different special need. They will be experts and teach their classmates in an oral presentation in any style they like. When choosing how to present their chosen special need, they must keep in mind the questions of "How can I best show what I know?" and "How can I best make people understand?" We have been discussing at length the importance of these presentantions. We want to understand others and their special needs, and respect people for who they are.

In 4D the presentation dates are as follows:

Tuesday May 11th:
Marije
Camille
Helen
Megan
Francisco C
Marc
Matthias
Tomas

Wednesday May 12th:
Solene
Catarina
Tom
Mariana
Rita
Eduardo
Patricia

Thursday May 13th:
Francisco B
Joao
Sarah
Viviana
Ines
Tiago
Diogo

Students should work on these presentations at home (as many students have chosen to use technology as part of the presentation). The students should be sure to have their research notes at school EVERYDAY as we may be doing different activities that requires them.

This is turning into a fabulous learning experience for students and teachers alike!

Tuesday 27 April 2010

Language Arts Homework Week of April 27th

Please note that the Language homework for 4LB and 4D will be different this week!

4Ds language homework is:

We have been looking a bit at Terry Fox and his inspirational Marathon of Hope across Canada. This week's Language Arts homework is to write at least 2 paragraphs (5 sentences for each paragraph) expressing how Terry Fox's story made you feel and how it changed the way you think about people with special needs. Remember to use proper paragraph structure and use the great adjectives that we have come up with to describe him.

This homework is due Friday April 30.

4LBs language homework is:

To learn the homophone spellings for homework.

To write a sentence for each of the homophones, clearly explaining what the word means.

eg. there, their and they're (they're = they are)

There is a spider on your shirt.
Julie and Sandra have lost their books.
The Thompson family told me that they're going on holiday to Greece in the summer.

This homework is due Monday 3 May and the sentences should be handed in on a piece of paper with your name on it with the homphone underlined!

Thank you!

Miss Lamb

Unit of Inquiry homework update and field trip information

Unit of Inquiry homework update (due Tues 27/4)

The children should now have had the opportunity to have done some research on the special need they will be speaking about. The oral presentations will only take place in about 2 weeks so we will have plenty of time to prepare. We are doing it stage by stage so the children will have a lot of support and be fully prepared by the time their presentation date comes. All they need to do for homework is take the notes they have collected about the characteristics of the special need and put it into paragraph form. They can write it draft, edit it with you or an adult for spelling, grammar and punctuation, and then write or type it up in best. The paragraph should include a title at the top and their name at the bottom. Max 6 lines please!

If the children need to do any more research they can use the World Book encyclopaedias in the library at lunch time, non-fiction books or the internet. St. Dominic's has also subscribed to a fantastic search engine for kids called 'searchasaurus'. To access this website please go to search.ebscohost.com. The User ID is sd and the password is main. You will then be able to see the Searchasaurus link with the dinosaur next to it. Another great website for researching this unit is kidshealth.org and it has information for almost all of the special needs we have been researching. KidRex is also a wonderful one and there is a link to it on the right hand side of the blog. As the children are just learning how to research 'properly' it would be great if you could support them in this skill by showing them how to extract important information. Happy researching!
This homework is due on Tuesday 27 April.

Field trip information

Tomorrow, both Year 4 classes will be going on a field trip to the Gulbenkian museum to learn about the links there are between maths and art.

We are asking the children to come in school uniform and to bring a snack in a 'throw away bag' with their names on it. Please don't send any plastic tubs that you would like back as this makes it very difficult for us to take these things around the museum with us. If the children normally have lunch in the refectory or at the tuck shop lunch will be provided for them. However, if they normally bring a home lunch they will also need to bring a 'throw away' lunch from home in a plastic/paper bag with their name clearly marked on it.

Please could you ensure that your child arrives at school on time and that they bring a hat and apply sun cream as we will be spending the afternoon in the gardens.

I am sure it is going to be a fantastic day!

Wednesday 21 April 2010

"Bunny Hop" date change

4D will be doing the Bunny Hop, but it has now been changed to NEXT Friday, rather than this Friday. So make sure you make a free moment to come in and see their FANTASTIC 4D dance moves!

Unit of Inquiry homework.

By now, the children should all know which special need they will be doing their oral presentation on for the summative assessment.

We have been working very hard with Mrs C, our librarian, on improving our research skills in preparation for this task. We have been focusing on using 'child friendly' encyclopaedias, non-fiction books and search engines.

For homework this week, we would like the children to write a short paragraph (about 6 lines) which explains, in child-friendly language, the characteristics of the special need they are researching. They will write this paragraph using the notes they have made whilst researching the special needs in class and during their own time in the library (no copying and pasting for Wikipedia!) Please remember the library is open at lunch time if you would like to get any extra information from the World Book encyclopaedias. This will make up the first part of your oral presentation (the introduction). Remember the longer you make it, the more lines you will have to learn for your presentation so try to keep it short but informative.

Please remember to include the title and present it in a neat way (typed or handwritten) as we will be displaying these paragraphs for other children to read within the classrooms. Remember to put your name at the bottom of your work so we know who did it!

Thank you,

Miss Lamb

Tuesday 20 April 2010

Maths homework (finally!) due 23/4

Apologies for the delay in giving out the maths homework this week.

We are now looking at EQUIVALENT fractions and fraction walls. The homework includes daily practice, as usual, as well as a worksheet on fractions and page 92 in the textbook. We have also given out a fraction wall which children can colour in to help them with their knowledge of equivalent fractions.

Things to remember:
1. A fraction is a part of a whole.
2. The denominator is the number at the bottom (think D for DOWN) and tells us how many parts the fraction has been divided into (how many parts in total)
3. The numerator is the top number and tells us how many parts are shaded in out of the whole (how many bits you've got)

Hope you enjoy the homework and remember to let us know BEFORE the time if you are having any trouble with it.

Math Homework

This week in math we will continue our work on fractions! We are becoming real pros!!! This week's math homework will be given out on Tuesday and will be due on Friday, as usual.

Saturday 17 April 2010

Research Assignment

Just a reminder that students do not need to research their assigned special need yet as we will be working with Mrs. C in the library to learn proper research techniques and various websites and databases that the students can search on.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday 15 April 2010

Unit of Inquiry homework

This week we would just like you to talk to your children about different kind of special needs (communication) and maybe find out about some of them.

Discuss with them how it makes them feel when they see wheelchair users or people with very obvious special needs. Is it always possible to see if a person has special needs or not? How has access and provision for people with special needs changed since you were their age?

Also, when you are walking around school, in a public place or at the park talk to them about whether people with special needs could access the buildings or equipment the same way they do. What things can you see that have been put in place specially for people that may have special needs...

The different special needs we will be focusing on in this unit are:
Dylexia, Dysgraphia, Dysphasia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, Autism, Aspergers syndrome, ADHD, ADD, Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, Visual impairments (varying degrees of blindness), Hearing impairments (varying degrees of deafness), Epilepsy and mutes.

There are many other kinds of special needs but we have decided to limit our inquiry into the above.

Your children are not required to start their research until we have had our session in the library with Mrs C !

This unit may well evoke some feelings of sadness or may make children uncomfortable but we are hoping that after this unit we will have a better understanding about people who are different to us and be more open-minded about this important part of our society.

The same but different!

Hello everyone!

I'm sorry that I didn't post last night but Miss D and I had to clarify some points about our new unit before we put up the information for you.

So here is what you need to know!

Key concepts: RESPONSIBILITY, FORM and PERSPECTIVE!

These are really important in terms of:

FORM - What different kinds of special needs are there? What are their symptoms? How would we know if someone had a particular special need?

PERSPECTIVE - What would it be like to have this kind of special need? How would my life be different?

RESPONSIBILITY - What responsibility do different communities have towards people with special needs? What responsibilities do we have? What responsibilities does our school community have?

Central idea:

A community has the responsibility to meet the needs of its citizens.

Lines of Inquiry:

1. Different kinds of special needs (form)
2. Living with special needs (perspective)
3. How communities can support people with special needs (responsibility)

Summative Assessment:

During the course of this unit of inquiry, the children will choose a special need that they would like to 'specialise' in. They should then research this special need at home, with their parents, in preparation for the summative assessment.

The summative assessment will be an oral presentation on the special need that they have become an expert in. They should discuss our 3 lines of inquiry:

  • Title of the special need

  • What symptoms does this special need have?

  • How is daily life different for someone with this special need?

  • What strategies can be put in place to help this person lead an easier life?
We will be supporting and guiding the children through this process in class too and next week Mrs C, from the library, will be teaching us how to research effectively so you might want to hold on with your research until then!

Attitudes:

RESPECT and APPRECIATION

Although this is not ENTIRELY related to this unit, the teachers and adults around our school are finding that the children in Year 4 really need to concentrate on being more respectful towards other children, adults and staff as well as their own things and school property. Also, as the majority of the children in our school come from priveleged backgrounds they sometimes find it hard to show appreciation for small things that other people do for them or for the things that we have in school. We would be very grateful if you, as parents, could help us teach and model these 2 very important attitudes to our children.

Learner Profile:

During this unit we are looking for children to be OPEN-MINDED about different kinds of special needs and people who might look physically different from us. We are also looking for good COMMUNICATORS and communication skills within the summative assessment, which will be the oral presentation!

Hope you got all that!

Any questions or comments about the unit of inquiry please feel free to email me!

Bye for now,

Miss Lamb!

Language Homework

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This week we are doing a great deal of work on our blueprints and summative assessments. We will be focusing on the summative assessment during class and some written components may be sent home during the week and over the weekend. Therefore, this week we will not be giving any formal Language Arts homework.

Curious about the summative assessment? Ask your local architects for 4D and 4LB to fill you in!

Maths for the week beginning - March 15th

Hello everybody!

This week we shall begin preparing for our 3-way conferences next week. The children will be reflecting on their learning and will identify what they have learnt in different areas. They will then identify their goals for maths.

We shall also be revising measurement of length, in preparation for our Flute Workshop on Thursday (how exciting!), and handling data.

Homework - due Friday 19th March
Activity
p.34 and 35 of maths textbook - revision of bar graphs and surveys. Read the instructions VERY carefully!
Practice
This week the children will be expected to be responsible learners! We would like the classes to choose the areas they feel they need to practise. These should be linked directly to their maths goals and they cannot visit websites as part of this practice. Their work should be recorded in their maths homework books. We can't wait to see what they have chosen to practise!

Unit of Inquiry homework! Due Tue 23/03

Hi everyone!

I had some troubles posting the latest UoI homework so Miss D and I have decided that this homework will only be due on Tuesday, 23rd of March!

This homework comes in TWO parts! Each part should take you about 20 mins, no more...

1) The first part of the homework is to draw a floor plan of your bedroom at home!

A floor plan is a drawing that shows a room as seen from above. Everything in a floor plan appears flat. Architects use floor plans to show what a room or building will look like. A floor plan is the way a three-dimensional object, such as a house or a room, is represented on a flat piece of paper. It is usually drawn to scale, meaning while objects are drawn smaller than they are in real life, they are still the same size in relation to each other. But don't worry - we are NOT asking you to do it to scale!

Floor plans include not only the rooms that will be included in the new stucture, but other important details such as where the windows, doors, pipes and places for the electricity will have to be built.
So when you are drawing the floor plan of your bedroom you need to include the following things:

1. the door
2. the windows
3. any electrical sockets
4. your bed
5. any other furniture

Make sure you choose a symbol to use for each item and make a key.

2) The second part of the homework is to draw a floor plan of the bedroom you WISH YOU HAD!

Make sure, once again, to include:

1. the door
2. the windows
3. any electrical sockets
4. your bed
5. any other furniture or items you wish you had in your bedroom

This room can be any shape you like. The walls do not have to be at right angles to each other! Please include a text description on a separate of the materials you would use to build your dream bedroom.

So - we are expecting 4 sheets of A4 paper.

1) An A4 floor plan of your current bedroom, in black and white (squared paper) titled - 'My bedroom'.
2) An A4 floor plan of you DREAM bedroom in black and white (squared paper) titled 'My Dream Bedroom'.
3) A piece of text or table showing what materials you would use to build different parts of the room (lined paper)
4) The key - which shows us what all your symbols on your floor plans mean. Please use the same symbols for both floor plans. We understand that your 'dream' bedroom might have some extra symbols that your current bedroom does not have ; )

eg. walls - I would use bricks and mortar to build the walls and
then smooth them over with cement and paint them
                      blue
floor - I would multi-coloured tiles for the floor

Before you start your homework google some floor plans and see how they are 'normally drawn'. Try draw your in a similar way using common symbols for doors/windows.

Remember - we are just asking you to do your bedroom NOT your whole house! Please do not colour them in. Squared paper will be sent home by the school.

Good Luck!

Miss Lamb

ps. Take a look at the websites below to see some very cool, weird and BIZARRE architecture...

Language Homework - due Friday 12th March

What a fantastic morning we all had in Year 4! We were fortunate enough to be invited to the year 6 Exhibition where we learnt so much about all things concerning the economic crisis. Year 4 asked some really thoughtful questions and showed themselves to be respectful, responsible peers.

We would like all Year 4 students to design their own thankyou card for Year 6. The front cover design should show something from the exhibition - we're looking for lots of creativity here! The message should explain what they liked about the exhibition and congratulate the children on all of their work.

We will be particularly interested in the presentation and layout of the card, the language used in the message and the creativity used for this piece of homework. We can't wait to read these cards!

The due date for this homework is Friday 12th March - don't be late!

Tuesday 9 March 2010

Maths for this week - starting 8th March

Lots of work this week! We shall continue our work on symmetry and constructing 3D shapes - we are very proud of the symmetry sketches of different buildings from year 4. We have some very talented artists!

We shall also be revising our subtraction strategies of adjusting and partitioning and this will also be the focus of this week's homework.

We shall also be developing our measuring skills for length in preparation for a flute workshop next week! The children will be making their own flutes with a special guest and therefore need to make sure they can use a ruler to measure accurately in cm and mm.

Homework - due Friday 12th March
Activity
The homework activity for this week focuses on subtraction - p. 10 and p. 11 of textbook.

Maths Practice
Maths Practice for this week again focuses on different number facts. We are looking for neatly presented work and expect this to take 5-10 minutes.
Monday - write 7x and 9x table in maths homework books.
Tuesday - write number bonds to 50 in maths homework books - e.g. 27 + 23, 36 + 14
Wednesday - doubles up to 50
Thursday - halves up to 50 - watch out for those odd numbers!

Thursday 4 March 2010

Unit of Inquiry homework due Tuesday 9/3

Hello everyone,

Congratulations to all of you who took part in World Maths Day! What a great success it's been - I'm so glad everyone has enjoyed it so much. Can't wait until it comes around again next year!

I'm writing to you from freezing cold Prague, Czech Republic, where Miss D, Miss Goode, Mrs Balazs and myself are attending workshops for teachers. There are some beautiful buildings and structures in this city - wouldn't it be great if we could come here on a field trip for our unit?

For this week's unit of inquiry homework I would like you to choose 5 materials that are used in construction. I would like you to list the properties of each material and then write a sentence to explain why it is a construction material. For example: Why would we use lots of cement and bricks in construction but not cotton wool? Why is glass used in construction?

Don't forget that properties are words that describe materials (adjectives) that do not change. The adjectives "long", "short", "red" and "blue" are not properties because although they are adjecives, the colour and the size of a material can be changed.

This homework is due on Tueday 9 March.

Hope you're all having a lovely time and being well behaved for the supply teachers! : ) See you Tuesday.

Miss Lamb

ps. I wonder whether you can find out where Prague is on the map and show us when we get back into school!

pps. Here are some clues for your language homework
1.  t _ _ c _ c _ _ (it has 3 wheels)
2. _ i c _ c l _ (it has 2 wheels)
3. t _ i _ n _ l _ (a 2D shape with 3 straight sides)
4. _ _ _ p _ d (something with 3 legs that holds up a camera)
6. b _ l _ n g _ a _ (being able to speak 2 different languages)
7. t _ _ p _ e _ s (3 children born from the same parents at the same time)
8. _ _ k _ n _ ( a 2 piece swimming costume)

Language Arts Homework March 5th

Prefixes Please!
This week we have been looking at prefixes such as re, pre, un, and dis. We learned that prefixes add to the meaning of a word. Re means to do something again and pre means to do something ahead of time.
This week for homework you must brainstorm words (from your own ideas and in the dictionary) into two lists of words that begin with bi and with tri. When you have done this you must then look at the words and the definitions and decide what bi and tri add to a word and write it under your two lists.
This homework is due FRIDAY MARCH 5TH.

Symmetry Website

I have now added a really great website all about symmetry to our blog. It is called 'symmetry' and you will find it in the shape, space and measures section.

Take a look at the page about symmetry found in buildings - we'll be doing more about this in class. I also really liked the nature section - so many beautiful photos!

Enjoy :)

4LB Assembly

What a great assembly 4LB! I was incredibly proud, not only of your performance, but of the teamwork and commitment you showed when writing and practising your assembly. You are all showing yourselves to be more responsible learners - well done!

A BIG thank you also to parents for coming along and supporting your child - we know it's not always easy to be there but it meant a lot to all of us - thank you!

Photos for 4LB's assembly will also be uploaded shortly.

Monday 1 March 2010

Maths for this week - starting 1st March

This week we will be learning about symmetry. We will make different symmetrical patterns and will look at the use of symmetry in different structures. We will also continue our work on nets for 3D shapes.

Maths Homework - due date is Friday 5th March
Complete p 6 and 7 in textbook - revision of addition strategies.

Maths Practice - to be recorded in Homework books please.
Monday - 4x and 6x tables.
Tuesday - number bonds to 1000
Wednesday - doubles up to 1000
Thursday - halves of up to 1000

Don't forget to take part in the online competitions for World Maths Day on Tuesday and Wednesday night too! Good luck!

World Maths Day!

Happy World Maths Day everyone! Yes, Wednesday 3rd March is the official World Maths Day but this will start for us at 11am on Tuesday 2nd March. This is because at this time the 3rd March has already started for some countries!

I hope that we will all be able to take part in the live on-line competition at home this week and help break that world record! Let's also see if we can have somebody from our school appear in the Hall of Fame!

Children in Year 4 can also choose to come dressed up as something mathematical. 4D are to dress up as mathematical symbols...4LB can dress up as anything they feel is mathematical - get creative everybody!! I can't wait to see those costumes!

Language Arts Homework Feb 24

This week is going to be a little different than usual. 4LB will be doing their assembly this Friday so their Language Arts Homework is to memorize their lines. Good luck 4LB!! 4D is going to be given their Language Arts Homework tomorrow and it is due Friday February 26th. During class we will be working on conjunctions and this will carry into their homework. Students will receive a text that has various sets of sentences (ex: "John went to the store. The store was closed.") The students must then choose the appropriate conjunction to join the sentences (ex: "John went to the store but it was closed.")

New Unit of Inquiry!

Hello everyone!

We have started working on our new unit of inquiry.

Here are some details about this new unit:

Central idea: We use different materials for different purposes to build structures.

Lines of Inquiry:

1. Famous structures
(looking at famous structures around the world, what they are made of and what their function is.)

2. Properties of materials
(looking at different types of materials, whether they are natural or man-made, the properties of these materials and how and why certain materials are used in construction and why some ARE NOT!)

3. Principles of design and construction
(Learning about the process of designing and constructing a structure from start to finish. We will also be designing our own structures.)

The key concepts we will be focusing on are FORM and FUNCTION.

During this unit we will be going on a great field trip to see a straw bale house and we will also have a flute making workshop linking what we are learning about in our unit to music and which materials are used for making different instruments.

Here are some fab websites linked to this unit:

Some of these sites are quite complex but would still be great to look at with your children. Some of them the children can work on independently!

1. http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/revision/Science/changingmaterials.htm

Scroll down to the bottom of the Woodlands site for lots of other games and links to different websites about materials and their properties.

2. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/7_8/characteristics_materials.shtml

Characteristics and properties of materials

3. http://www.student.cardonald.ac.uk/internal/materials/construction/properties%20of%20building%20materials/index.htm

This above one is quite complex but would be a great challenge - read through with an adult!

4.http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks1/english/career_books/building_materials/page12.htm

5. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/lab/materials.html

6. http://architecture.about.com/od/structural/Construction_Facts.htm

The above site would be a good reading activity do to with an adult.

7. http://www.archkidecture.org/learn.html

Architecture for kids!

8. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/science/materials/characteristic_materials/read1.shtml

Properties of materials

9. http://www.mikecurtis.org.uk/ks2_properties.htm

10. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/7_8/characteristics_materials.shtml

How can you support your child through this unit?

By looking at, discussing and reading through the contents of the above websites.
Looking at different materials around the house and discussing what the properties of the material are and why it was used to make a particular item.
If you see a building site along the road or near your house you might want to stop and talk with your child about what stage the construction is in and what is going on...

Any questions, please feel free to email me!

Happy researching!

WORLD MATHS DAY!

The countdown has begun to World Maths Day on 3rd March 2010. This is a truly unique world event and a fantastic way to improve numeracy skills. Past results show that students will make significant improvements in their mental arithmetic skills and have great fun in the process!

Last year’s event involved over 2 million students from 204 countries. This year the organisers are trying to beat the world record for the largest online maths competition - we want our students to be part of this exciting event!

Every student in Year 1 – 6 (and students in senior school too) has been given their own username and password so that they can take part in this challenge. This should be glued into their school diary. Students then go the World Maths Day website: http://www.worldmathsday.com/ to sign and start playing live games of mental arithmetic against other students around the world. How exciting!

Even though the online competition takes place on Wednesday 3rd March we would like everybody to practise as much as possible in the 20 days leading up to this. Please encourage and support your child to take part in this event.

Wednesday 10 February 2010

Carnival - Friday 12th February

Carnival is nearly here! We can't wait to see all of the amazing costumes on Friday and we will take lots of photos to share with you. We would like all of Year 4 to come dressed in their costumes and they will not need to bring their school uniforms.

Happy Carnival everyone!

We've done it!

A BIG congratulations to all of Year 4 (and Year6) for completing the ISA tests!

They showed great concentration skills during the two days - what super stars they are!

Well done Year 4, we are very proud of you!

Monday 8 February 2010

ISA Testing

This week we will be taking part in the International Schools' Assessment Testing Program. The tests will be held on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th February and will begin promptly at 8:40am so PLEASE make sure your child is at school by 8:25am at the latest as we will not be able to wait for them.

On Tuesday the children will be completing a maths test and a writing task. On Wednesday they will complete another writing task and a reading test. They will need to bring a ruler, eraser and sharpener to school.

The tests are only held in the morning and normal classes will continue as usual afterwards. The children will have scheduled breaks throughout the tests so please make sure they have a energy filled snack (and breakfast!) on these days.

There is absolutely no need for your child (or you!) to feel anxious about these tests, so please support your child by creating and maintaining a calm atmosphere on the journey into school.

Thanks for your support
Year 4 Team

Maths for this week - starting 8th February

This week we will begin looking at coordinates and will plot a variety of different 2D shapes in the first quadrant! In this area of maths we will be discussing lots of new vocabulary , such as point of origin, direction, axis, axes, vertical, horizontal and plot - ask your child to explain what these mean!

We shall also be starting our work on 3D shape but will explore this further over the coming weeks.

Maths Homework - due Friday 12th February
Complete p.146 'Plotting Points' and p.68 'Lines and Shapes' to reinforce their understanding of classwork on coordinates and 2D shapes.

Maths Practice this week:
